Day 3: Fort Portal Crater Lakes – Explore the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Region
Today is dedicated to exploring the beautiful crater lakes surrounding Fort Portal.
After breakfast, meet your local guide and travel towards the Ndali-Kasenda crater-lake region. This area is known for its numerous volcanic craters, many of which contain freshwater lakes surrounded by green hills, farms and pockets of natural vegetation.
Begin with a visit to Lake Nkuruba, where you can enjoy a guided walk through the surrounding nature reserve. The area is known for its forest vegetation, birdlife and opportunities to observe monkeys.

Day 4: Fort Portal to Semuliki National Park – Discover the Sempaya Hot Springs
After breakfast, depart Fort Portal and travel towards Semuliki National Park.
The journey takes you through the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains and towards the Albertine Rift Valley. The scenery becomes increasingly tropical as you approach the lowland rainforest of Semuliki.
Upon arrival, proceed to the park entrance and meet your ranger guide for the day’s activities.
The main highlight is a visit to the famous Sempaya Hot Springs. The site features two major geothermal springs:
- Male Hot Spring – Bintente: A bubbling geothermal pool surrounded by forest vegetation.
- Female Hot Spring – Nyansimbi: A dramatic spring known for its powerful boiling water and steam.
A guided walk allows visitors to appreciate the geothermal activity and the surrounding rainforest. The hot springs are an interesting geological feature, demonstrating the forces that have shaped the Albertine Rift Valley.
The Sempaya experience can also be combined with a guided nature walk along the forest trail, where you may encounter birds, butterflies and primates.
Please remember that the water is extremely hot. Visitors must remain on designated paths and follow ranger instructions. Do not touch the water or approach the boiling vents.
For further information, visit Sempaya Hot Springs and the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Semuliki National Park page.
After the visit, continue to your accommodation in the Semuliki Valley or Bundibugyo area.

Day 5: Semuliki Rainforest Exploration – Guided Nature Walks and Birdwatching
Today offers more time to explore the remarkable rainforest ecosystem of Semuliki National Park.
After an early breakfast, meet your ranger guide and choose a forest walk that suits your interests and fitness level.
The park has several established trails, each offering a different experience of the lowland rainforest.
Option 1: Sempaya Nature Trail
This is a popular route for visitors interested in the hot springs, forest scenery and primates. The trail is approximately 8 kilometres and is commonly described as taking around 2–4 hours, depending on walking pace and stops.
Option 2: Red Monkey Track
For travellers interested in a longer forest adventure, the Red Monkey Track is approximately 11 kilometres. It follows the eastern edge of the park towards the Semuliki River and offers opportunities to explore forest habitats and search for the rare De Brazza’s monkey.
Option 3: Kirumia Trail
Birdwatchers and experienced hikers may prefer the Kirumia Trail. This longer route runs through the heart of the forest towards the Semuliki River and is approximately 13 kilometres. It is commonly described as an eight-hour round trip and requires an early start.
The rainforest is rich in birdlife and other wildlife. Your guide will help identify the different species and explain the ecological importance of this forest, which forms part of the wider Congo Basin forest system.
After the walk, return to your accommodation for relaxation.
The selected route must be confirmed with Uganda Wildlife Authority guides based on trail conditions, weather and the group’s fitness.
More information is available through the Semuliki nature-walk guide.
Accommodation: Semuliki Valley or Bundibugyo area
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Semuliki to Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve – Explore the Albertine Rift Savannah
After breakfast, leave the Semuliki rainforest region and travel towards Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve.
Although the national park and wildlife reserve share the Semuliki name, they protect different environments. Semuliki National Park is known for its tropical lowland rainforest and geothermal springs, while Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve includes savannah woodland, riverine forest and wetland habitats.
On arrival, check in at your lodge or camp near the reserve.
Depending on the transfer time, enjoy an afternoon game drive through selected reserve tracks.
The reserve provides opportunities to encounter animals such as:
- Uganda kob.
- Buffaloes.
- Elephants.
- Waterbuck.
- Warthogs.
- Bushbuck.
- Various primate species.
The area also offers excellent scenery, with views towards the Rwenzori Mountains and the Albertine Rift Valley.
Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather and animal movements, and cannot be guaranteed.
Return to your lodge for dinner and an evening at leisure.
Accommodation: Toro-Semliki or Ntoroko
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7: Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve and Lake Albert – Wildlife and Birdwatching
Today is dedicated to discovering the wildlife and wetland attractions around Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve and Lake Albert.
After an early breakfast, choose a guided nature activity in the reserve. Depending on the group’s interests and the day’s arrangements, this may include a game drive, a guided primate walk or a nature walk through selected habitats.
The reserve offers a chance to explore savannah woodland and riverine forest. A guided primate walk may provide opportunities to search for chimpanzees, baboons and different monkey species, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Later, enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Albert.
The lake and its surrounding wetlands are important habitats for a variety of waterbirds. One of the main attractions for birdwatchers is the shoebill, a remarkable bird associated with papyrus and marshland habitats.
Other possible sightings include African pygmy geese, bee-eaters and other wetland bird species.
The boat excursion offers a different perspective of the surrounding landscape, with views across the lake and towards the distant mountains.
You may also arrange a community experience with local residents, including traditional music, dance and craft activities where available.
For additional information about activities, visit the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve page.
Return to your accommodation in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Day 8: Ntoroko to Entebbe – Return Journey
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Entebbe.
Travel through western Uganda, passing through the Fort Portal region and continuing towards central Uganda.
This is a substantial road transfer, so an early departure is recommended. Make suitable stops for refreshments, lunch and photographs along the way.
On arrival in Entebbe, check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening.
The overnight stay is recommended to avoid connecting a long road journey directly to an international departure.
Accommodation: Entebbe

Best Time to Visit Semuliki and the Fort Portal Crater Lakes
The region can be visited throughout the year, but the drier periods generally offer more comfortable conditions for hiking and road travel.
The commonly preferred drier periods are:
- June to August.
- December to February.
During wetter months, forest trails and crater-lake walking paths may become muddy and slippery. Some unpaved road sections can also be more difficult to navigate after heavy rainfall.
Semuliki is a tropical rainforest environment, so rain is possible even during generally drier months. Visitors should carry waterproof clothing and suitable walking shoes throughout the year.
What to Pack for the Semuliki Expedition
For a comfortable experience, we recommend packing:
- Lightweight long-sleeved shirts and hiking trousers.

- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
- A small daypack.
- Reusable drinking water bottle.
