On arrival, check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch overlooking the surrounding countryside.

In the afternoon, visit a suitable viewpoint overlooking one of the waterfalls. Depending on weather conditions and your interests, your local guide can arrange a gentle walk around the area.

The length and difficulty of the walk can be adjusted to suit your fitness level. Some sections are steep or slippery, particularly after rainfall, so proper walking shoes are important.

Later, enjoy a community-based coffee experience. The Mount Elgon region is well known for its Arabica coffee, and local farmers can introduce visitors to the different stages of production, from growing and harvesting to processing, roasting and preparing the final drink.

Best time to take this Uganda and Rwanda tour

The tour can be arranged throughout the year, but the drier months are generally more comfortable for hiking, scenic drives and outdoor activities.

June to August is a particularly attractive period for this itinerary, with generally favourable conditions for exploring the Mount Elgon highlands, walking around Sipi Falls and enjoying Rwanda’s northern landscapes.

January and early February can also be considered, although weather conditions vary between destinations. Rwanda has rainy periods, and wet weather can make forest trails and mountain paths more challenging.

Travellers should remain flexible because mountain weather can change quickly.

Kuku Safaris can arrange accommodation according to the traveller’s preferred comfort level and budget.

Suggested accommodation categories include:

  • Entebbe: Comfortable hotels or lakeside properties with easy airport access.
  • Mbale: Well-appointed town hotels with restaurant facilities.
  • Sipi Falls: Scenic lodges or cottages overlooking the waterfalls and Mount Elgon foothills.
  • Kigali: Established city hotels with convenient access to major attractions.
  • Musanze: Comfortable lodges or boutique properties with views of the Virunga volcanoes.
  • Karongi: Lakeside lodges or hotels with views of Lake Kivu.

Specific properties should be selected after checking current operating status, guest reviews, location, facilities and availability.

Fitness and suitability

This itinerary is suitable for travellers who enjoy nature, scenery and moderate outdoor activities.

The Sipi Falls walks involve uneven terrain and may include steep or slippery sections. Golden monkey tracking also requires walking through natural forest terrain, where conditions depend on weather and the location of the monkeys.

Travellers should be comfortable walking for reasonable periods and inform Kuku Safaris of any mobility or health limitations before booking.

This programme does not include a strenuous Mount Elgon summit climb or mountain gorilla trekking. Those activities can be discussed as separate additions where suitable and operationally advisable.

Yes. Uganda and Rwanda can be combined in one itinerary. This programme uses a flight between Entebbe and Kigali, followed by private guided travel within each country.

2. Do I need separate visas for Uganda and Rwanda?

Eligible visitors may use the East African Tourist Visa, which covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for tourism. It is valid for 90 days and is issued by the country of first entry. EAC citizens generally benefit from regional visa exemptions, subject to the applicable travel-document rules. Travellers should check their own nationality’s requirements before departure.

3. Is golden monkey tracking included?

The itinerary includes a planned golden monkey tracking experience in Volcanoes National Park. A valid permit is required and should be secured in advance. Availability and access must be confirmed before the tour is finalised.

4. Is this tour suitable for families?

Yes, it can suit families with older children who enjoy nature and walking. The golden monkey experience and waterfall hikes should be assessed according to each participant’s age, fitness and the relevant park rules.

5. Is gorilla trekking included?

No. This itinerary includes golden monkey tracking rather than mountain gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking may be discussed as a separate addition, subject to permit availability, current security advice and suitability.

6. Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Kuku Safaris can adjust accommodation standards, activities, departure dates and the length of the tour. Additional nights in Uganda or Rwanda can also be arranged.

7. Is the Uganda–Rwanda journey by road?

This version uses a flight from Entebbe to Kigali. This avoids the need to travel through the south-western Uganda border region as part of the standard itinerary. A land-border option should only be considered after checking border operations, government advice and insurance cover for the exact travel dates.
