Introduction: Discover Kenya’s Rhino Conservation Heritage

Experience the wildlife and conservation landscapes of central Kenya on this 10-day Rhino Conservation, Aberdare and Laikipia Safari with Kuku Safaris.

This journey combines three distinctive destinations that demonstrate Kenya’s commitment to protecting endangered wildlife.

The adventure begins in Aberdare National Park, a beautiful highland wilderness of montane forests, open moorlands, waterfalls and dramatic mountain scenery. The park is home to wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, leopards and the endangered black rhino.

You will then travel to Solio Game Reserve, one of Kenya’s important rhino conservation destinations. The reserve has a long history of rhino protection and is also home to the Solio Rhino Orphanage, where rescued and orphaned animals receive care and rehabilitation.

The final destination is Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia. This internationally recognised conservation area protects significant populations of black and white rhinos and is home to the world’s last two northern white rhinos. It also operates Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a refuge for rescued chimpanzees.

Beyond the wildlife encounters, the safari provides opportunities to learn about anti-poaching operations, wildlife monitoring, veterinary care, habitat protection and the relationship between conservation and local communities.

Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, conservation traveller, photographer or first-time visitor to Kenya, this itinerary offers a meaningful introduction to the country’s conservation work.

Detailed 10-Day Kenya Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi – Welcome to Kenya

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be welcomed by a representative from Kuku Safaris and transferred to your hotel in Nairobi.

Depending on your arrival time, spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring some of the city’s attractions.

Travellers arriving early may enjoy a visit to selected craft markets, restaurants or cultural attractions around Nairobi.

In the evening, meet your safari guide for a briefing about the upcoming conservation journey.

Your guide will introduce the safari route, accommodation arrangements and the wildlife experiences planned in Aberdare, Solio and Ol Pejeta.

Accommodation: Nairobi
Meal plan: Dinner, depending on arrival time

Day 2: Nairobi to Aberdare National Park – Discover Kenya’s Highland Wilderness

After breakfast, depart Nairobi and travel towards Aberdare National Park.

The drive takes you through the central highlands, passing rural settlements, agricultural landscapes and scenic countryside.

On arrival in the Aberdare region, proceed to your selected accommodation and complete the necessary check-in arrangements.

After lunch, enjoy an afternoon excursion into the park, subject to the lodge location and the day’s access arrangements.

Aberdare is very different from Kenya’s open savannah parks. Its landscape consists of dense montane forest, cool moorlands, deep valleys and dramatic waterfalls.

During your excursion, you may encounter wildlife such as:

  • African elephants.
  • Cape buffaloes.
  • Black rhinos.
  • Bushbucks.
  • Warthogs.
  • Giant forest hogs.
  • Various forest birds and primates.

The forest habitat makes wildlife viewing more challenging than in open grassland, but it creates an atmospheric safari experience.

Return to your lodge in the evening and enjoy dinner.

Accommodation: Aberdare National Park area
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Aberdare National Park – Forest Wildlife, Waterfalls and Conservation

Today is dedicated to exploring the natural attractions of Aberdare National Park.

After breakfast, enjoy a guided park excursion with opportunities for game viewing and scenic photography.

One of the main attractions is the park’s network of spectacular waterfalls.

Depending on trail conditions and access, your excursion may include:

Karuru Falls

One of the most impressive waterfalls in the Aberdare Range, Karuru Falls descends through a deep forested valley. The surrounding environment provides beautiful scenery and opportunities for photography.

Chania Falls

Enjoy views of the Chania River cascading through the forest landscape. The falls are an attractive stop for visitors interested in nature and scenic viewpoints.

Queen’s Cave and Magura Falls

Where the route and local conditions permit, explore the area around Queen’s Cave and Magura Falls.

Forest and moorland exploration

For more active travellers, selected hiking trails may be arranged with appropriate guiding and park permissions. Experienced hikers can discuss longer excursions towards Mount Satima and other highland viewpoints.

The Aberdare ecosystem also has an important conservation history. The black rhino population was severely threatened by poaching and habitat pressures, and the Rhino Ark fence project helped protect the wider ecosystem.

A guide can introduce you to the importance of forest protection, wildlife corridors, anti-poaching work and reducing human-wildlife conflict around the park.

Return to your accommodation in the afternoon for relaxation and dinner.

Accommodation: Aberdare National Park area
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Aberdare to Solio Game Reserve – Journey into Kenya’s Rhino Country

After breakfast, depart Aberdare and travel towards Solio Game Reserve.

The journey takes you through the scenic central highlands towards the privately managed reserve in the Laikipia region.

Solio is widely recognised for its contribution to rhino conservation in Kenya. Its landscape combines grasslands, woodland and wetlands that provide important habitat for rhinos and other wildlife.

Upon arrival, check in at your selected accommodation near or within the reserve, depending on availability.

After lunch, enjoy your first game drive in Solio.

The reserve is particularly well known for its black and white rhinos. It also supports wildlife such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, impalas and predators including lions and leopards.

Your guide will introduce you to the reserve’s conservation history and explain the importance of protected breeding and monitoring programmes.

Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner.

Accommodation: Solio Game Reserve / Laikipia area
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Solio Game Reserve – Rhino Conservation and Orphanage Experience

Today is dedicated to the rhino conservation work at Solio.

After an early breakfast, head out for a guided game drive through the reserve.

The open grasslands and woodland provide opportunities to observe both black and white rhinos in their protected habitat.

Your guide will explain the differences between the two species, their feeding behaviour, habitat requirements and conservation challenges.

Later, enjoy a pre-arranged visit to Solio Rhino Orphanage.

The orphanage provides care for rescued and orphaned wildlife, including young rhinos requiring specialist attention and rehabilitation.

During the visit, learn about:

  • Why some young rhinos need to be rescued.
  • The care and veterinary support required by orphaned animals.
  • How keepers support rehabilitation.
  • The process of preparing animals for eventual release where appropriate.
  • The challenges of protecting rhinos from poaching and habitat pressures.

The orphanage offers visitor experiences that include viewing the rescued animals and separately arranged supervised interaction and feeding options. These must be booked directly in advance, and guests should follow all keeper instructions.

This is an especially meaningful experience for conservation-minded travellers because visitor contributions help support the care and rehabilitation of orphaned animals.

After the visit, return to your accommodation for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Depending on availability, enjoy another game drive or spend time appreciating the wildlife around the lodge.

For booking information, visit the official Solio Rhino Orphanage page and its visitor booking page.

Accommodation: Solio Game Reserve / Laikipia area

Day 6: Solio to Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Discover Laikipia’s Conservation Landscape

After breakfast, leave Solio Game Reserve and travel towards Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

The journey passes through the central Laikipia landscape, with scenic views of open plains, farmland and Mount Kenya on clear days.

On arrival at Ol Pejeta, complete the park entry formalities and proceed to your accommodation.

Ol Pejeta is one of Kenya’s most important private wildlife conservation areas. Its conservation work includes the protection of endangered rhinos, wildlife monitoring, veterinary care, anti-poaching operations and community development.

After lunch, enjoy an introductory game drive.

The conservancy supports a wide range of wildlife, including:

  • Black and white rhinos.
  • Elephants.
  • Lions.
  • Leopards.
  • Buffaloes.
  • Grevy’s zebras.
  • Giraffes.
  • Cheetahs.
  • Jackson’s hartebeest.

The open landscape offers rewarding wildlife photography opportunities, particularly during the late afternoon.

Return to your camp or lodge for dinner.

Accommodation: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Meet the Last Two Northern White Rhinos

Today is one of the main highlights of the safari.

After breakfast, proceed for your pre-booked northern white rhino conservation experience.

Ol Pejeta is internationally recognised as the home of the world’s last two northern white rhinos.

The northern white rhino subspecies is considered extinct in the wild. The two remaining animals are protected within a secure area of Ol Pejeta, with round-the-clock security and specialist veterinary care.

During the guided visit, learn about the history of the northern white rhino, the circumstances that led to its dramatic population decline and the scientific efforts being made to save the subspecies.

The experience may introduce visitors to:

  • The history of the northern white rhino.
  • The role of dedicated rhino protection teams.
  • The importance of veterinary care and monitoring.
  • Assisted reproduction and embryo research.
  • International collaboration in conservation science.

The experience is conducted under strict conservation guidelines. Visitors must remain within the designated viewing areas and follow ranger instructions. It is not a hands-on animal encounter.

After the northern white rhino visit, return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed game drive through selected sections of Ol Pejeta.

For more information, visit Ol Pejeta’s official northern white rhino conservation page and its conservation experiences.

Accommodation: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Rhino Monitoring

Today explores another important part of Ol Pejeta’s conservation work.

After breakfast, visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a refuge for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.

The sanctuary was established to provide long-term care for chimpanzees rescued from illegal trade, exploitation and other difficult circumstances.

Although chimpanzees are not native to Kenya, the sanctuary offers them a protected environment where they can recover, socialise and live with appropriate care.

During the visit, learn about:

  • The history of the sanctuary.
  • How rescued chimpanzees are rehabilitated.
  • The importance of social groups and enrichment.
  • The threats facing chimpanzees in their natural habitats.
  • Conservation education and responsible wildlife care.

Later, enjoy a pre-arranged rhino monitoring and identification experience, subject to availability and the conservancy’s operational conditions.

This experience introduces visitors to the work of rhino monitoring teams, who identify individual animals, record their movements and support the conservancy’s protection programme.

Your guide will explain how rhino monitoring supports population management, health checks, security planning and long-term conservation.

Return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, enjoy a final game drive or a guided bush and bird walk, depending on your interests and available activities.

Accommodation: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Ol Pejeta to Nairobi – Return to the Capital

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning in the conservancy, depending on your departure schedule.

You may take a short game drive around the lodge area or simply enjoy the views of the Laikipia landscape.

Later, depart Ol Pejeta and travel towards Nairobi.

The conservancy is approximately 220 kilometres from Nairobi, with a normal road journey of around four hours under favourable conditions. Allow additional time for traffic and stops.

On arrival in Nairobi, check in at your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

The overnight stay is recommended to avoid connecting the road journey directly to an international flight.

Accommodation: Nairobi
Meal plan: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Departure from Nairobi – End of Your Rhino Conservation Safari

After breakfast, depending on your international flight schedule, you will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward journey.

This marks the end of your Kenya Rhino Conservation, Aberdare and Laikipia Safari with Kuku Safaris.

You will leave with memorable experiences of Kenya’s highland forests, rhino conservation programmes, rescued wildlife and the extraordinary story of the northern white rhinos.

Meal plan: Breakfast

Best Time to Visit Aberdare, Solio and Ol Pejeta

These destinations can be visited throughout the year, but the drier periods are often more comfortable for game drives and outdoor activities.

The commonly preferred drier periods are:

  • June to October.
  • December to March.

During these months, road conditions are often more favourable and wildlife may be easier to observe in some habitats.

The Aberdare highlands can be misty and wet even during generally drier periods. Visitors should therefore carry warm clothing and waterproof gear.

Ol Pejeta is a year-round destination. The conservancy describes the dry seasons as favourable for wildlife viewing, while the greener periods provide beautiful landscapes and a different photographic atmosphere.

Kuku Safaris can arrange accommodation according to the traveller’s preferred comfort level and budget.
